Port of Argentia Partners with Festival of Flags
Argentia, NL – August 22, 2017
The Port of Argentia was among the many partners present at the recent official opening of Festival of Flag’s Argentia at War Exhibit displayed at Marine Atlantic’s ferry terminal. The exhibit focuses specifically on Argentia’s crucial role in the strategically critical Battle of the Atlantic as the US Navy’s main operational base for anti-submarine forces during World War ll.
Construction of the Argentia base necessitated appropriation of the land areas and two communities were resettled to local nearby towns. Work at Argentia begun in late 1940 and core naval and military facilities were in place in the coming years. US occupation spanned a period of 54 years, providing many social and economical benefits to the region.
In 1994, the US flag was lowered at Argentia and Land Transfer Agreements saw the formation of the Argentia Management Authority as the benefactor of these tremendous assets. The organization is tasked with a mandate to repurpose the lands and properties to bring about economic renewal for the region.
The Port’s Board Chairperson Vivian Smith was on hand and stated, “The Port is proud to partner with Festival of Flags with this key initiative and we are delighted to play a role in Argentia’s past and future. Additionally, we applaud Marine Atlantic for providing an excellent venue for this exhibit to be showcased for both locals and tourists alike”.
The ceremony drew a large crowd of local residents, visitors and tourists and featured presentations and certificates of appreciation to the many corporate sponsors and government funding partners. Political dignitaries and former Argentia residents cut the ribbon and officially opened the exhibit.
