About

Overview

Port of Argentia is a heavy industrial seaport located on the southeastern portion of the island of Newfoundland, Canada.

Formerly the site of a U.S. Naval Base, Argentia is being redeveloped with a diverse group of port users and tenants providing support services to key industry sectors, such as marine transportation, renewable energy, aquaculture, offshore oil, and mining.

Port of Argentia is North America’s first monopile marshalling port in support of US energy transition. Argentia’s strategic location and proximity to US offshore wind developments are key factors in securing contracts to receive offshore wind foundation monopiles for laydown and storage. Utilizing its existing infrastructure and vast land assets, the Port has dedicated over 70 hectares of paved runways, within 2 kms of quayside, to monopile marshalling.

Argentia is the port of call for both domestic and international container shipping lines. Eimskip calls Argentia regularly on its Green Line bringing cargo to/from Europe to the United States. TMSI provides a weekly scheduled service to/from Argentia and Halifax.

Cooper Cove Development

Infrastructure

Port of Argentia is planning a major dock expansion project at Cooper Cove in Argentia Harbour. This $100M infrastructure investment will see the port’s quayside capacity add 430 metres of dock facilities alongside over 12.5m water depth at three berths., including a roll-on roll-off feature. Additionally, this development will add approximately 12 hectares of valuable laydown space adjacent to the new dock. The new facility will feature the latest innovations to maximize decarbonization and port electrification.

Funding

Government of Newfoundland and Labrador recently announced a commitment of $15.1M to this project; this follows the Federal Government of Canada’s commitment of $38M announced last year.

Environmental Assessment

The Provincial Government of Newfoundland Labrador recently released the Cooper Cove Marine Terminal Expansion Project from environmental assessment, with conditions. The project is still going through a Federal environmental assessment.

Conceptual drawing below depicts proposed dock expansion, laydown acreage and support facilities; final design may be modified to reflect effective integration of multiple user applications.
